RM9's Development Outsourced?

A little something new from "The Shadow."

Apparently, RM9/MM9 is being developed by Capcom with the aid of an unknown third party company. "The Shadow" wouldn't identify who the third party company was, but compared the "partnership" to Capcom's former involvement with the Zelda GameBoy games.

This assumption is based upon RM9/MM9's title screen which depicts two developers next to the copyright date.

This news may lead to the assumption that RM9/MM9 is being developed by Capcom USA (which would explain why it's being beta tested in the US) with the aide of a third party developer that might have had a hand in the development of the other "Capcom Digital" titles. (Bionic Commando Rearmed, SFTIITHDR, Commando 3, 1942) To note, all recent Capcom Digital titles have been developed within the US alongside a third party developer.

How does this make you feel? Would you still purchase RM9/MM9 knowing that it wasn't developed by the fine folks at CoJ?

As with all of "The Shadow" rumors, take them with a grain of salt.

  1. I'm very fine with it being developed by a third party company along with Capcom USA. Heck it might even do some really cool stuff that Capcom of Japan never thought of. The most important thing I think of in a Mega Man game is level design and difficulty curve.

  2. If this "Shadow" fellow is for real, why doesn't he just come out with everything? He's not doing any better of a job protecting his information by continually leaking details. Not to mention that this blog seems to be full of rumors that haven't come to fruition. I have a feeling people are coming here to get their chain yanked.

  3. The Capcom/Nintendo Zelda games were some of the best GB games in my opinion. I liked them way better than Link's Awakening.

  4. I've got news for ya: The Shadow is dying for attention. He's hardly a reliable source as far as I've seen so far. If "THe Shadow" can prove me wrong, by all means go for it.

  5. I'll give The Shadow the benefit of the doubt; after all, I've heard of this type of marketing (slowly leaking out details) working for series like Castlevania. However, I'm not getting truly excited until we see proof beyond that Australian rating. ~RADIX

  6. well... i don't know if these are good news... if there's not Capcom of Japan staff, it cannot be an installment. =/

  7. Rockman 9 WILL NOT be developed by Capcom USA. The only way for this happening is that Keiji and his Production Studio moves to Cali.

As for the shadow, I think he may be close to reliable sources... but not as a tester. If he would be testing the later half of the game, that means the project is on its 60-70% of gameplay codification. And by now, waaaaaay more info should have leaked out.

  8. Assuming this is all legit (which is quite dubious--I remain highly skeptical), I don't think the partial outsourcing is such a bad idea. After all, Capcom wasn't even directly involved with MM6--that was pretty much Nintendo's sole project, and I think that game worked out very well.

And I don't miss CoJ too much either. After all, if they're so preoccupied with pumping out Star Force stuff, then by all means let Capcom of America/Australia/Europe give us the classics instead.

  9. Gigaman: Look at it this way. If more had leaked out, the hype may have negatively affected the game-in-progress; hence why Capcom and Not Capcom haven't said anything about it. At least, that's what I'd like to think. ~RADIX

  10. I think another MM game might be coming. Just take a look at Street Fighter and Bionic Commando, they are both getting a downloadable title plus a major Disc Title. Could MM9 be Mega Man's downloadable title?

  11. Well, they can't do any worse than CoJ has with some of the series, in my non-humble opinion. If someone (anyone!) has ideas for reviving the franchise, Capcom should rightly jump on it.

  12. I just want to know: Why Capcom is developing and testing a game like "Rockman 9" secretly, while Street Fighter 4 is in almost open development since the beginning? This will be the bigger hoax in the history of videogames since Duke Nukem Forever.

  13. I'm a little suspicious of this "Shadow" person. Isn't he risking his job by providing this information? Wouldn't his job require a confidenciality agreement?

  14. @morphmoth:

    Of course he's at risk.

But the delicate balance of being able to give enough details so that you don't anger Capcom, and drip-feeding info, is part of the game itself.

As long as "he" is smart, and doesn't blow his load all at once, like the guy who leaked the shots for the new DS Castlevania MONTHS ago, Capcom won't be able to nail "him", and he gets to skate by scott-free.

...On the other hand, part of me still wonders if this "Shadow" is basically part of a viral marketing campaign that Capcom's using to infiltrate the MM/RM fanbase, drip-feed these rumors about Rockman 9 and initiate hype for their upcoming game.

I wouldn't put anything past Capcom at this point.
