Rockman 9: 'The Shadow' Speaks

Before the leaked OFLC rating and Destructoid's time traveling cat, Rockman Corner has been teased with news of a Rockman 9 from "The Shadow," a self proclaimed "beta" tester at Capcom USA.

For about a month or so, The Shadow has subjected PRC to rumors of a Rockman 9, the most notable rumor concerned Rockman 9's presence on XBLA and PSN. Myself along with other readers swept his remarks under the rug. However, the fact that The Shadow's rumors have popped up before all others leads us to now assume he is indeed a reliable source.

Thus, I am honored to announce that The Shadow has agreed to spill some specifics about Rockman 9 exclusively through PRC. Without further adieu:

-Rockman 9 will feature a retro 8-bit art style, a homage to the earlier games.

-Two playable characters: Rockman and Blues (ProtoMan). Each has their own unique storylines.

- A popular belief is that RM9 will act as the 'link' to the events of the X Series. This is not so, The storyline DOES NOT lead into the X Series, rather it's a 'traditional' plot.

-Many new characters, new Robot Masters and maybe some new supporting characters.

-Gameplay is reminiscent of Rockman 3-6.

-Online components: Leader boards and some unknown form of online play

-RM9 will be on all major home consoles: Wii, X360 and PS3. X360 and PS3 users will be able to purchase the game from their respective download services. It's unknown how the Wii version will work, whether it will be a downloaded game or not.

  1. The one thing that I'm wondering is the 8 bit style part. Do you mean as in the graphics will use NES sprites and the colors on the screen will be limited to 16 colors at a time? Or do you mean just the art style of the characters will look more like the old Mega Man games character art and not like the chibi powered up?

  2. The Shadow was kind of vague about it, but I'm pretty sure he'll show up soon to answer all questions.

  3. That's what I was wondering. Hey Shadow, what about Scramble battle? Know anything about that or any other MM wii titles?

  4. Hey Protodude, U JUST MADE MY WHOLE WEEKEND, FOLLOWING MONTHS AND EVERYTHIN ELSE!

I JUST LOVE THE CLASSIC SERIES. THE SERIES I GREW UP WITH.

I just hope there is a retail version for the PlayStation, somthing as a limited edition, instead of just downloading it.

  5. Awww... I prefer nice sprites to 8-bit. :\ I guess that aspect will be clarified later.

  6. OH YES, YES! ALL OVER MY FACE!

This is all sounding almost too good to be true. Hopefully you're not pulling the heartstrings of Rockman/Mega Man fans here, Shadow. I don't think my poor heart could take such a thing if this was all falsified.

  7. Yeah, I'm also wondering what the "retro 8-bit art style" means exactly... Anyway, I'm starting to believe this game is real... and having Blues as a second playable character sounds pretty good (but, no Forte? :S).
Here's hoping for a retail Wii version! :P

  8. Blues as a playable character??? Wow!! If this does come out, it'll be the best thing ever. I do hope that if it is real... it can actually be bought and not just downloaded.

  9. I think the 8 bit retro style will be kinda like what Megaman A was to Megaman ZX Advent: The main game will be regular 360/PS3 graphics on a 2-D plane(Think X8 but better) but there will be an additional mode that has the game in the 8-bit NES style. I think. I hope. It'd be stupid if the game itself was only 8-bit. Talk about Capcom shooting itself in the foot.>o<

  10. Im just dissapointed because its a download title. I mean, we waited forever for MM9 and its not even a retail title? Im very worried

  11. I don't believe it. This 'Megaman 9' sounds like it'd be fun, a worthy addition to the franchise, a great revival, and very profitable.

And that's why I don't believe it. Capcom doesn't do things this smart anymore. Once the screen shots show up I'll get in line but for now this is too good to be true.

  12. - My generation played the NES Rockman series, buying magazines in an era with NO internet for spoilers. Great (nostalgic) days that wasn't the same with the X series, unfortunately. Well, do NOT junk the 8-bit style - if you never played them, so bear that and take some respect. It's something SUPERB to hear... and for those ones, what SO bad? They did a remake for Rockman X (PSP) and no success; they did another gfx style for Rockman Rockman (PSP too) and it was flamed because of the graphics. What now? Please, respect is a nice key.

    - I don't mind about a "downloadable title", since buying a DVD isn't the same feeling of buying a cartridge anyways.

  13. ...and I agree with colin completly. Capcom is "out of ideas". The USA version of RnR should be "Star Force", then "Tribe". There's no "star force" on Tribe! :(

  14. Everything here sounds good to me, especially the bit about Proto Man's own game mode and storyline.

The only thing that troubles me is the 8-bit NES graphics part. Now I am very much an old-school retro gamer and appreciate the art style of the old MM1-6 as much as the next old fart. But to have new games in the title come out like that I think is a bit of a stretch.

Think back to Mega Man 8--which continued the classic gameplay but with graphics contemporary with that time (PSX 32-bit graphics). I should expect something similar for MM9--but then again, I have no idea the graphical capacity for these downloadable games, so I may be batting a bit out of my league here. =P

Even so, it remains only a minor complaint. Everything else looks golden.

  15. Do people here actually believe this bullshit? Come on, does this actually _sound_ real? Not in the least!

  16. Why not? There's a (supposed) Capcom beta tester leaking news to us. Plus, what's the bad side of it?

  17. "Why not? There's a (supposed) Capcom beta tester leaking news to us. Plus, what's the bad side of it?"

There you go, keyword supposed. Like how ZX3 was "supposidly" supposed to show up at Captivate. Whoops, our sources are wrong! There is no ZX3!

I'm not beleiving anything yet until i see some CoroCoro scans. Seriously, all this muck over a rumor.

  18. the artwork at the top of the page is the cover art for Rockman Complete Works 5, Blues No Wana if I am correct. Dont hold me to that. There have been rumors sounding exactly like this for years now.
The better it sounds the less I'll believe.
I want it to be true but I highly doubt it.
No one should take this for fact until there is solid evidence.

  19. I just don't believe that capcom will make something like a retro-Rockman release, since Rockman 8 went right. I love all the 8-bit thing, but that's all the opposite from what Capcom is doing nowadays, with games like Street Fighter and Bionic Commando. And it contradicts Imafune's interview from last year. Rockman Rockman went bad, very bad. So I don't believe a single word of it. Let's wait for E3.

  20. Interesting. I'm guessing that just like the Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network, this game might be released for the Wii as a WiiWare game.

  21. yep, there has been a lot of rumors going on, but the news of 8-bit retro syle is new...
oldskool's nc, but 8-bit graphics released today would make it look like a romhack. Impossible... BUT I AM HOLDING OUT FOR THIS ONE, SINCE I'M A SUPER LOYAL MEGAFAN...
Also, I want Forte in it!

  22. someone alredy faked us... there's a hoax photo of Megamam and a chimera... If such extent was deceptive, how could not this one?!

sory, but we just dont want people abusing our passion for Rockman 9. It makes us true fans feel very very angry.. tnx 4 the info anyway. made me happy nonetheless.
